Enter Christian’s world, which for the last year and a half consisted of
multiple tours across the US and Europe and the recording of a debut CD.
Throw in a beat up Honda Civic, fast food, receipts, coffee, bad weather,
more fast food and his trustworthy Guild acoustic guitar and you begin to get
a sense of whom he is. An artist who is both hardworking and committed to
his music and success without giving up, selling out or losing sight of that
which he believes – that which he knows.
Born in Paterson, New Jersey to working class parents, Christian discovered
music at an early age and immediately took to an old baby grand his parents
brought home, writing original songs. Influenced from an early age by the AM
radio sounds of Motown and Oldies, Christian had no desire to practice
endlessly on Bach and Beethoven. He wanted to rock and roll and finally
found a teacher who let him. Even early on he was getting a strong dose of
the personality his music would carry today. It was the soul of the Beatles,
the hooks of Billy Joel and the passion of Springsteen that would serve to
carry his playing over the next fifteen years.
After recording his first EP Picket Fences in September 1994, he packed up
the car with dreams, some clothes and the guitars and moved to Los Angeles.
It was the ultimate escape from the limbo of New Jersey and also a smack in
the face. Without friends, a job or an apartment, he hit the walk of fame
running and within a month had filled all the above and found an internship
with a music publishing house.
Diving into the local scene, Christian made a small name for himself during his first year in L.A. He had an honest tone in his music that seemed to cut
through the cynicism breeding around him. It was why people were drawn to
listen and watch. Like a classic movie or a great novel you could always
count on being able to escape into Christian’s music. In late 1997, Christian formed the Between and debuted that November. By January they had recorded an EP entitled torn and began performing consistently in the LA
Basin. In June of 1998, Christian and fellow singer/songwriter Michael
Chandler embarked on a 3-week solo-acoustic tour of the East Coast. Upon
returning to LA, Christian and the band began pre-production work on what was
to become naked and alive, the debut CD.
Naked and alive lets you inside the heart of a man as he walks down a path of emotional growth that only true maturity can ignite. The album opens with
the cynical and comical take on the rat-race of a typical day in "Waste of
Time" and continues with the hook driven march of "Rain." From the
bittersweet, percussive "Bye, Bye" to the blues paean to lost love in
"Boston" Christian paints impressionistic pictures of a broken heart and yet
shows a future beyond the vulnerable portrait seen on the cover. The spirit
of Springsteen is evident in "Far Away" while the pop sensibility of Billy
Joel shines in "Virginia." Christian shows a diverse love of various styles
of music yet connects all the songs with tight and cohesive arrangements and
production.
He continues to draw comparisons to Ani DiFranco, not by way of his
songwriting, but by the way he attacks his art, his business, and his life
force. A recent article on Christian’s performance started off like this
"Fabulous. Phenomenal. Spectacular. Breathtaking. Unbelievable." Well
believe it folks. It’s not often you find an artist with such drive that 0
to 60 in seven seconds is too slow for him. Hop in the passenger seat of his
Honda and fasten your seat belt. There’s room and the ride is gonna be a
long and exciting one.
